Purpose
This Intelligence Community Standard (ICS) for Publication Metadata shall be applied to information standards associated with information products (e.g., publications, reports, and web pages).
Publication metadata describe the structural concepts that make up information products, such as the product type, titled sections, paragraphs, lists, and tables. They are tightly linked to other classes of metadata including information resource metadata and information security marking metadata.
Needs and Requirements
This standard was developed to provide the foundation for the exchange and reuse of information products regardless of where and how they were originally produced. The conceptual elements defined in this standard are the basis for capturing content and security markings internal to information products. This standard is essential to the successful implementation of a wide range of advanced automated tools that will help find, organize, analyze, and manage information products.
