Shawn Turner was appointed Director of Public Affairs for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence June 24, 2011. Mr. Turner is responsible for managing all U.S. National Intelligence communication efforts and ensuring coordinated communication outreach on behalf of the 16 agencies and components that make up the Intelligence Community.  

Prior to joining ODNI, Mr. Turner was the Assistant Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs for the National Security Staff. While at the NSS, Mr. Turner was the principal spokesperson for Afghanistan and Pakistan and the communication outreach coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa. Mr. Turner has also held positions with the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he helped develop and deploy communication strategies for the drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq, and the Department of Defense where he managed wide range of high-profile communication challenges.
 
Mr. Turner is a retired Marine Corps Officer of 21 years. He holds a M.A. degree in crisis communication from George Mason University, and a B.A. degree in communication from Texas State University. Mr. Turner is a member of the National Communication Association, the International Communication Association, and former assistant editor of Communication Research Reports. He has received a number of awards including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal. He is also the co-author of “Best Practices in Risk Communication for National Defense” published in The Handbook of Science and Technology for Homeland Security, Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2009.

Mr. Turner is from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is married to Dr. Monique Turner of Traverse City, Michigan and they have two daughters.
