The Federal Government has a long and outstanding record of employing veterans and the Intelligence Community is no exception.

The ODNI created the Intelligence Community Wounded Warrior Program in June of 2009 to consolidate similar efforts across the IC, boost the number of permanent and temporary job opportunities for wounded service people, and raise awareness.

Over the past three years, many IC organizations – including the ODNI, NRO, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency – have individually supported the Defense Department’s Operation Warfighter Program, which helps service members who are recuperating at military facilities to land temporary assignments in the federal government.

These IC efforts complement the President's Veterans Employment Initiative to increase the hiring of veterans across the federal government. Federal service provides a means for veterans to continue their noble service to this country.

The Office of Personnel Management has created a web site, a single depository without redundancy and misinformation that meets all veterans' employment information needs.

All applications must be submitted electronically.  ODNI makes employment decisions based on a fair and equitable competitive hiring process where applicants’ qualifications (education, professional experience, and skill set) are reviewed and evaluated. 

Once a candidate selection has been made, a secondary phase of ODNI’s hiring process is security processing.  All applicants will need to be prepared to undergo a thorough background investigation examining the applicant’s life history, character, trustworthiness, reliability, and soundness of judgment.  The ODNI utilizes polygraph examiners to conduct a polygraph exam on all employment candidates. Another phase of ODNI’s hiring process includes a thorough mental and physical medical examination in relation to performing essential job functions.

A career in intelligence can be enormously rewarding and also demanding. Not only is it required for intelligence professionals to be highly competent in their professional fields, ODNI employees must also be highly reliable, trustworthy, and possess a high level of personal integrity.


Once an applicant has received an offer of employment and has successfully completed the security and medical processing, a security clearance may be granted. The clearance process is strictly governed by rules and regulations derived from Federal statute and executive orders. It involves a thorough examination of the applicant’s life history and ability to safeguard the nation’s secrets.  The clearance process can be lengthy - possibly taking up to four to six months. Individuals already cleared at the TS/SCI level may experience expedited security processing.

Not every person in the Intelligence Community works out in the field. In fact, for every field personnel we employ, we have a huge network of essential support staff behind the scenes. These men and women analyze information, translate foreign language documents, develop new intelligence technology, design software and hardware, write reports for the president, and more.

Among the 17 agencies that form the IC, we staff offices in all 50 states and all over the world. This means, wherever you live, there may be an opportunity for you in your own back yard.

We hire technology specialists, software and hardware developers, engineers, scientists, security experts, foreign language experts, acquisitions and financial managers, and more. Regardless of your particular skills, if you are interested in an intelligence career, chances are we have a position that would be perfect for you.

Wounded Warrior Program

The IC Wounded Warrior program strives to provide information and opportunity for America’s combat-wounded military members. Using semi-annual career fairs hosted by various IC agencies, the veterans learn about unique internship opportunities that may provide a match between their skills and IC agency/element mission requirements.
