DNI Statement on the Selection of Robert Cardillo to be the Next NGA Director

Today, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, with my concurrence, announced that Robert Cardillo will be the next director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Robert brought his leadership and professional expertise to bear on the most critical challenge the Intelligence Community has ever faced – integrating the IC agencies and elements. He stepped into a new position we created, and as my deputy director for intelligence integration, has moved the IC forward as a community. At the same time, he has directly served the President as my principal designee for the President’s Daily Brief.  He is bringing this wealth of experience to the helm at NGA, and I expect NGA to continue on its rising trajectory under his leadership.

Robert is succeeding Tish Long  who will retire later this year after four years as head of NGA and more than 35 years of government service.  Tish’s leadership has been superb, not just at NGA but also as the functional manager for geospatial intelligence. It’s no accident, no coincidence that GEOINT has matured as a collection discipline at the same time that NGA matured as an institution under Tish’s great leadership. Tish has brought to life things we just talked about, dreamed about, when I served as NGA director.

I congratulate Robert and his family on his selection to lead NGA, and I thank Tish and her family for her dedicated service to our nation.
