Statement by DNI Clapper on the Departure of Matthew Olsen as NCTC Director

Today Matt Olsen announced his plans to leave his position later this year, after three years of absolutely superb and honorable service to our nation as director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Since assuming the reigns in 2011, Matt and his leadership team have worked tirelessly to better integrate our counterterrorism community, successfully strengthening key partnerships across IC agencies and elements and with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies. Matt developed a skilled, interagency workforce, arming it with the information and tools it needed to warn against terrorist attacks and to provide U.S. decision makers the intelligence they needed to counter this threat. Under Matt’s leadership, NCTC has continued to evolve – proving its unique value to the security of our nation on a daily basis.

Please join me in thanking Matt for his leadership and commitment to protecting our nation. We will miss his professionalism and collegial approach, and wish him well on his future endeavors.

James R. Clapper, Director of National Intelligence
