The Office of the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG), along with the Intelligence Community Inspectors General Forum (the Forum), recently named winners of the 2018 Intelligence Community Inspectors General Awards. The Forum consists of the twelve statutory and administrative Inspectors General having oversight responsibility for an element of the Intelligence Community. The Chair of the Forum is the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community. As part of the National Intelligence Professional Awards Program, the competition evaluates eligible candidates and teams for recognition in seven award categories: lifetime achievement; collaboration; leadership; audit; inspections; investigations; and IC-wide mission impact. Awardees across the various categories have enhanced the stature and standing of their professions, functions, and disciplines through extraordinary contributions to mission and objectives set forth in the U.S. National Intelligence Strategy, and to the missions of their respective IC Offices of the Inspector General (OIG).

Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael K. Atkinson announces the first-time public release of the Office of the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community’s Work Plan. The plan identifies the ICIG’s congressionally-directed mandatory, as well as discretionary, assessments for the upcoming year. Each of the identified assessments supports and furthers the ICIG’s statutory responsibility to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration and implementation of the programs and activities within the responsibility and authority of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), and to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in such programs and activities.

The European Commission recently published its second annual review of the EU-US Privacy Shield, which provides a mechanism for complying with data protection requirements for the transfer of personal data from EU citizens to U.S. companies for commercial purposes. The Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG) Michael K. Atkinson had joined other senior officials from the United States government, the European Commission, and European data protection authorities in Brussels for the mid-October review.

Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael K. Atkinson is pleased to announce the release of the Semiannual Report to Congress for the period April 1, 2018 through September 30, 2018. The report, mandated by law, summarizes activities of the Office of the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG). It is the ICIG’s 15th Semiannual Report issued since the office was established seven years ago and the first issued by the new Inspector General, who was both confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in May.

Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael K. Atkinson is pleased to announce that the Intelligence Community (IC) has been named as one of the “Best Places to Work in the Federal Government” for the 10th consecutive year. This year the IC ranked fifth overall among 17 participating large agencies, according to independent analysis of federal workers’ job satisfaction and commitment in rankings compiled by the Partnership for Public Service.

The Office of the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community (ICIG) discussed its recently published Assessment of Intelligence Community Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Programs (INS-2018-001) as part of a panel hosted by the FOIA Advisory Committee. The ICIG team lead and senior inspector, along with Office of Inspector General (OIG) representatives from the National Science Foundation, National Credit Union Administration, and Department of State, discussed completed and planned oversight work related to FOIA and records management activities. The public meeting at National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) was the second of the committee’s 2018 2020 term. The Archivist of the United States appoints committee members to study FOIA issues across the government, solicit public comments, and recommend improvements.
