DNI Coats Statement on the confirmation of
Retired Vice Admiral Joseph Maguire as

Director of the National Counterterrorism Center

Today, the United States Senate confirmed retired Vice Admiral Joseph Maguire as the next director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Joe is exactly what our country needs at the helm of NCTC. His vast experience in the national security arena will benefit the counterterrorism community as our nation faces increasingly complex threats from around the globe. Joe previously served with distinction as NCTC’s deputy director for Strategic Operational Planning and as a member of the National Security Council’s Counterterrorism Security Group. He retired from the Navy in 2010 after 36 years in uniform. He commanded every level of the Naval Special Warfare Command, the Navy component of the U.S. Special Operations Command.

With Joe’s confirmation I would be remiss if I did not thank Russ Travers, who has served as acting director of NCTC for the past year. His leadership and counsel have proved invaluable to myself, the CT mission, and the IC, and are a testament to his dedication to the national security of our nation. We are fortunate that Russ will continue his service as deputy director of NCTC.

NCTC leads and integrates the national CT effort by fusing foreign and domestic CT information, providing terrorism analysis, sharing information with partners across the CT enterprise, and driving whole-of-government action to secure our national CT objectives.

I congratulate Joe and his family on his confirmation as NCTC director.

I am also hopeful that the Senate will act quickly to confirm Bill Evanina as the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center given the importance of this position in the face of growing counterintelligence and security threats to our nation.
