DNI Statement on the Resignation of U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano

July 12, 2013

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced today that she is stepping down at the end of August and will be nominated to be the next president of the University of California system. Janet has worked very closely with the Intelligence Community leading our efforts to safeguard our nation’s interests and to protect the homeland.

Since taking office in 2009, she has led important efforts including counterterrorism, border security, immigration enforcement, and disaster preparedness, response and recovery. During her tenure, Janet built a more collaborative information sharing environment with our federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement partners to have more effective methods of early detection of any domestic threats and support to natural disasters. As the President noted, Americans are safer and more secure because of Napolitano’s leadership.

On behalf of the Intelligence Community, I thank Janet for her commitment and invaluable contributions to the community and our nation.

James R. Clapper, Director of National Intelligence
